Vienna Attractions

Haas House
One of the most disputed building projects of the late 20th century, the modern Haas House of Vienna was built by the Viennese architect Hans Hollein. Haas House uses the principle "medieval houses built on top of Roman ruins, modern houses built on top of medieval ruins" to blend into its surrounding, even if architectural style is contrasted as a result. The glass façade of the monument opens up the square of St. Stephen's Cathedral. The interior of the Haas House was designed with attention to detail. Once on top, you can enjoy a spectacular view of St. Stephen's Cathedral at a beautiful coffee shop and restaurant.

Hofburg - Vienna's Imperial Palace
Originally a medieval castle, today the Hofburg's castle chapel ('Burgkapelle') alone demonstrates its medieval past. Today this complex comprises the "Österreichische Nationalbibliothek" (National Library), "Schatzkammer" (Imperial Treasury), and houses a collection of musical instruments, a collection of weapons, a "Museum für Völkerkunde" (Museum of Ethnography) and also a famous "Spanische Hofreitschule" (Spanish Riding School).

Karlskirche
Started in 1715 using the plans of one of the most famous Austrian Baroque architects Johann Fischer von Erlach, the Karlskirche (church) is the biggest cathedral in a Baroque style north of the Alps. The church was built to honour the vows of Emperor Karl VI and was given in the time of a severe plague epidemic. The Karlskirche was dedicated to Saint Karl Borromeo.

Naschmarkt
The Naschmarkt is a Viennese institution dating back to the 16th century. It is more than a mere market. The Wienfluss, Vienna's second longest river, was roofed over during the 19th century. A few dealers put up their stalls on top of this roof. At present, the Naschmarkt blends a unique mixture of Austrian traditions and oriental influences. After shopping, one can have lunch at one of the many stalls, coffee shops or restaurants. On Saturdays, Vienna's major flea market sells everything from junk to antiques.

Ring Boulevard
Four kilometers in length, the Vienna Ring Boulevard circles the city centre. It was constructed at the beginning of the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I in December 1857. It was erected on free space, which emerged after tearing down the city walls, glacis and military enforcements that had previously protected the city center. The Emperor hoped to overcome the separation of the city center and the suburbs, which had officially become part of Vienna in 1850. It was generously planned, leaving sufficient space for a shaded avenue and monumental buildings like Hofburg, Austrian Parliament, the State Opera House, the Museum of Fine Arts, the first public observatory Urania and the Vienna University, among others. Ceremoniously inaugurated on 1st May in 1865, the Ring Boulevard is one of the biggest and most beautiful boulevards of its kind.

Prater
Vienna's most popular fun fair, the Prater affords a great view over Vienna from the giant Ferris wheel. It also offers sports and an expansive area of parks, forest land and fields. Situated near the city centre, the Prater is ideal for walking, cycling, jogging or just lying on the grass after an exhausting sightseeing tour of Vienna. Two more attractions in the Prater are the Vienna Wurschtlprater, a fun fair with a Giant Ferris Wheel (Riesenrad) and the Lilliputian Railroad (Liliputbahn), a 2.6 mile amusement park line on a gauge of old steam locomotives, which provides transportation to the Trade Fair grounds as well as to the Prater Stadium.

Schönbrunn Zoo
Earning the distinction of being the world's oldest and only baroque zoo, the Schöenbrunn Zoo is situated in the south eastern part of the Habsburgs' Summer residence and was built in 1760. The special way in which animals are kept is what is unique about the Schönbrunn Zoo, after their specific requirements and the simultaneous emphasis of the Baroque heritage.

Wiener Hofreitschule - Spanish Riding School
The oldest and last Riding School in the world where classic dressage is still practiced in its purest form, the Spanish Riding School was founded in 1572. The name derived from the Spanish origin of its horses. The Lipizzaner is known to be the oldest and most classic race of horses in Europe. Horses need to undergo elaborate training before they are able to perform their prancing Renaissance ballet to the sound of classical music. The Riders of the Spanish Riding School train the horses and perform in the Winter Riding School in the Vienna Hofburg (Imperial Palace). Even if tickets are expensive, the elegant and complicated performance guarantees pleasure for spectators. The shows are most often booked for months in advance.

Stephansdom - St. Stephen's Cathedral
Visit St. Stephen's Cathedral - Stephansdom, one of Vienna's most famous sights. The Cathedral has defined the city centre and was built in 1147 AD. For a long period, the Cathedral was known to be the highest building in Europe, measuring almost 137 metres. The complete restructuring of the church in Gothic style was ordered by Duke Rudolf IV of Habsburg. The South Tower, was completed in 1433. The gigantic roof, and the tall, lean tower (136,7 metres high) are the two most magnificent features of the Cathedral. The Cathedral holds inside it many art treasures like the tomb of Prince Eugene of Savoy (1754), the Altarpiece of Wiener Neustadt, the pulpit by Anton Pilgram (1514-15), the sepulcher of Emperor Frederik III by Niclas Gerhaert (1467-1513), the watchman's lookout, a self portrait of the sculptor, and the Gothic winged altar. The Cathedral's big bell, the sound of the 'Bumerin' is utilised to celebrate New Year in Austria.

Wiener Staatsoper - Vienna Opera House
The Viennese Opera House is located in the first district of Vienna at the southern end of the Kärntnerstrasse. It was from 1861 to 1869 that August von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll built the State Opera House.
The Vienna Opera House has won world-wide repute for its first-class opera performances and is further acclaimed because of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.
