Lisbon Attractions

Torre de Belém (Belém Tower)
This pretty tower which looks more like a miniature castle is positioned close to the bank of the Tagus river. It was built in 1515 as both a monument to Portuguese maritime discoveries and to protect the mouth of the river Tagus.

Mosteiro dos Jerónimos
Construction was started on this magnificent monastery by King Dom Manuel in 1502. It was built to signify Portuguese importance as a world power at the time and more specifically to celebrate Vasco da Gama's discovery of a sea route to India and the Spice Islands.

The Alfama
This is the old town of Lisbon and is still beautifully picturesque with narrow winding streets and old overhanging buildings.

Castelo de São Jorge (St. George's Castle)
This magestic castle housed the kings and queens of Portugal until the 16th century. The well preserved outer walls were built by the Moors. From the mighty ramparts of this once powerful fortress there is a spectacular view of Lisbon.

Museu Nacional dos Coches (The National Coach Museum)
One of the most popular attractions in Lisbon and perhaps the finest example of this type of museum anywhere in the world. Consisting of a large display of opulent coaches built for the aristocracy, dating mainly from the 17th to the 19th century.

Museu Calouste Gulbenkian
The building in which this excellent art collection is housed beautifully compliments the wonderful assortment of work by a broad selection of artists.

Se Cathedral
The Cathedral was built with a mix of Gothic and Romanesque architectural styles.

Praca do Comercio (Terreiro do Paco)
This used to be the site of the royal palace until it was demolished by the disastrous earthquake of 1755. It is now Lisbon's largest open space with government buildings built around the perimeter.

Lisbon Travel Tips

When to Visit - Arts and Events

Shops close for approximately 2 hours at midday for Siesta. Banks are open until mid afternoon. Larger museums remain open all day. Year round, there are Religious Festivals or 'Romarias'. The patron saint of Lisbon, St. Anthony, is honored in local celebrations during June. Traditional markets are held twice weekly behind the Church of Sao Vincente de Fora.

Lisbon Dining

Scrumptious handcrafted pastries, simple fresh fish and famous Portuguese specialities are waiting in every nook and cranny of Lisbon - from the al fresco charm of the Baixa to the snug cafés of mediaeval Alfama. Synonymous with excellent food, Lisbon restaurants tempt their guests to taste the true flavours of Portugal; charcoal grilled sardines, bacalhau cooked in cream, caldereida and acorda, the national dish, (a bread based stew rich in seafood and flavoured with cilantro). These are just a soupçon of the authentic local dishes prepared with the freshest home grown ingredients. Vegetarian, macrobiotic and international cuisine are as readily available as seafood in a kaleidoscope of colourful restaurants from American to Vietnamese. Take note, however, many restaurants are closed on Sundays.

Lisbon Tipping Advice

Service is generally included in restaurant and hotel bills. Where this is not so, 10% -15% is adequate. Other service staff such as maids and porters should be tipped; 200 PTE is reasonable.
