Langkawi Attractions
Kuah
Town
Kuah, the heartbeat of Langkawi, is the first spot visitors will see upon
arrival to the island. The name Kuah, which means gravy in Malay, comes
from a legend of two battling giants who overturned a gigantic pot of curry.
Situated at the south-eastern tip of Langkawi, it is also the gateway to
neighbouring islands.
This once rustic and sleepy town, is now a thriving capital with a population around 12,000. Lacking the hustle and overcrowding of larger cities, it still boasts many attractions and facilities, including duty-free shops, handicraft centres, restaurants and fast food outlets.
Langkawi
Coral
Located in the pristine waters of Pulau Payar lies one of the world's most
spectacular coral gardens. A myriad of colourful, soft corals dominate the
rocky underwater seascape. There are also artificial reefs, which will give
divers an unforgettable underwater experience. Langkawi Coral is a highspeed
catamaran with its own reef platform. Other facilities are an underwater
observatory, glass-bottom boats, snorkelling equipment and diving facilities,
allowing everybody a close encounter with the coral and prolific marine
life.
Mahsuri's
Mausoleum
A trip to Langkawi would not be complete without visiting Mahsuri's Mausoleum.
Mahsuri was a fair maiden who was wrongly accused of adultery and hastily
sentenced to death. Legend has it that no weapon could kill her until they
used Mahsuri's own kris (traditional Malay dagger).
She bled white blood after the execution, which is said to signify her innocence. With her dying breath, she laid a curse that the island would not prosper for seven generations. The fine white marbled mausoleum was erected at the spot where she was entombed.
Pantai
Cenang
One of the most popular beach destinations among tourists and locals alike,
Pantai Cenang is known not only for its delightful sunsets but also for
its long and sandy beach. Located about 18 kilometres from Kuah town and
only three kilometres from the airport, it is fringed by coconut trees and
casuarinas. The beach is home to a number of resorts, luxury class hotels,
chalets and restaurants. While you are here, enjoy yourself with all kinds
of water sports or go "island hopping" to the nearby islands such
as Pulau Rebak Kecil and Pulau Rebak Besar.
Pulau
Payar Marine Park
The marine park comprises four islands, namely Pulau Payar, Pulau Lembu,
Pulau Segantang and Pulau Kaca. A ferry trip from Kuah takes around 45 minutes.
The islands are surrounded by well-protected coral reefs that are home to
numerous species of underwater creatures. Attracting divers from all over
the world, the park offers a variety of diving conditions, from flat terrain
to more challenging steep slopes.
Underwater
World Langkawi
Set on 6.2 acres of land on the superbly landscaped beachfront of Pantai
Cenang, Underwater World is one of the largest marine and freshwater aquaria
in Asia. It features over 5,000 varieties of fish and other exhibits from
500 species displayed in over 100 tanks. Highlights include the gigantic
hexagonal tank and walk-through tunnel tank containing six million litres
of sea water. Here you can observe sharks, stingrays, huge turtles and other
sea creatures swim by, separated from you only by the laminated clear glass
walls of the tunnel.
Gunung
Mat Cincang
One of the more prominent peaks on Langkawi, Gunung Mat Cincang, was believed
to have been a giant, known as Mat Cincang, who was cursed and turned into
a mountain. Fables aside, today the mountain rises in a spectacular skyline
of crags that glow pink in the sunset and is part of the Mat Cincang Range
which comprises of some of the oldest rock formations in Malaysia, dated
about 2,400 million years old.
Gunung
Raya
Rising to a height of 881 metres, Gunung Raya is the tallest natural feature
on Langkawi. The mountain is believed to be the cursed form of a giant,
known as Mat Raya, who once lived on the island. Untouched and covered with
dense jungle, it has become the favourite destination for the adventurous.
Trekking from a recreational site such as Lubuk Sembilang to the peak is
simply magnificent but taking a guide along is advisable. A telecommunications
station is accessible via a small road leading to the top.
Craft
Cultural Complex
Nestled on a hillside overlooking the sea at Teluk Yu is the Craft Cultural
Complex. It showcases the nation's rich craft cultural heritage. A wide
collection of Malaysian handicrafts are exhibited, such as the hand-drawn
batik, intricately carved silverware and the exquisitely crafted Langkawi
crystal. The building is also home to the Islamic Museum, Royal Museum and
Heritage Museum. There are also live demonstrations of traditional weaving
methods such as songket (cloth with gold thread) and Mengkuang (pandanus
leaves to create household items). Other facilities include the Museum Shoppe,
Sales Gallery, Seasonal Exhibition Centre and the Theatrette.
Dataran
Lang (Eagle Square)
The brainchild of Malaysia's Prime Minister, this prominent, 19-acre landmark
is major attraction to visitors disembarking at Kuah Jetty. The centrepiece
of the site is a huge and splendid statue of the reddish brown eagle after
which Langkawi is named. According to local folklore "Kawi" in
old Malay means reddish-brown eagle and "Lang" is the shortened
term for helang (eagle). Hence Langkawi is known as the "Eagle State"
The tranquillity and soft, cool sea breezes make this picturesque spot a
great place for leisurely strolls or a romantic dinner in one of the nearby
restaurants.
