Frankfurt Attractions

Alte Oper
Frankfurt's Old Opera House is a totally reconstructed version of the original, destroyed in WWII. All those arches, pediments and fleshy statues would have been replaced by a concrete 1960s cube if people power hadn't won the day; Frankfurt's population voted in favour of rebuilding the facade brick by brick rather than razing the remains and starting over again.

Deutsches Filmmuseum
The Deutsches Filmmuseum is a real treat, with premieres, themed exhibitions and seasons, and an extensive archive.

Goethe Haus
The great writer lived in this timber-framed house from his birth in 1749 until 1775, when he moved to Weimar. It was here that he penned his ode to suicide, The Sorrows of Young Werther, and began work on Faust. The rooms are nicely decorated with a mix of reproduction and original furniture, offering a glimpse of 18th-century domestic life. Don't miss Goethe's original writing desk and the library on the top floor. The Goethemuseum, housing a library of the writer's works, shares a gorgeous little garden with the house, perfect for getting away from the Sturm und Drang.

Museum für Angewandte Kunst
The Museum für Angewandte Kunst (Museum of Applied Arts) focuses on industrial and product design.

Museum für Kommunikation
The Museum für Kommunikation (Communications Museum) entertains kids with its hands-on exhibits and invisible ink, and the Cold War espionage equipment will bring out the 007 in adults.

Museum Judengasse
The Museum Judengasse preserves aspects of the old Jewish ghetto, and the adjacent Jewish cemetery includes a Holocaust memorial. Frankfurt's experience of the Holocaust is told in the Jüdisches Museum over in the west of the city, housed in the grand former home of the Rothschilds.

Römerberg
Grab a gelati, join the throngs and head for the old market square, site of the first Frankfurt Book Fair way back in 1480. The square is lined with a stage set of ersatz medieval buildings that give only a hint of the architectural riches lost during WWII. The three step-gabled pink buildings on the northwestern corner resurrect the old town hall (1405), or Römer, site of coronation celebrations during the Holy Roman Empire. Paulskirche, on Paulsplatz to the north, is fondly remembered for hosting the short-lived National Assembly of 1848. Further east, the Frankfurter Dom was one of the few buildings left standing after the bombing raids of 1944, and it was here that all those emperors were crowned.

Sachsenhausen
South-bank Sachsenhausen is the closest Frankfurt gets to 'old Germany' - rowdy taverns, rustic restaurants, tiny alleys. Cross the river via the Untermainbrücke and you'll find yourself on upmarket Schweitzer Strasse, lined with more boutiques, fine-food shops, trendy bistros and wine bars than you'll ever need. Head east from Schweitzer Platz's bistro conurbation and you'll hit Alt-Sachsenhausen, where the bar-crawling's a little more serious. This is the place for apple-wine taverns specialising in Frankfurt's signature tipple, Ebbelwoi. If the apple wine takes some getting used to, just wait till you try the bar snacks. Marinated cheese and onions is served with bread and dubbed Handkäse mit Musik (hard cheese with music - the 'music' being the farty accompaniment which results from eating such a pungent repast). If you want to take a tip from Goethe, try the ultra-herby sauce called Grüne Sosse, served with potatoes, eggs or meat - apparently it was his favourite dish.

Frankfurt Travel Tips

When to Visit - Arts and Events

Frankfurt has been a major trading centre since the 13th century. Today it is still a commercial and manufacturing centre and home to the European Central Bank, hosting numerous trading fairs on books, cars, consumer goods and technology.

Frankfurt Dining

Frankfurt offers a wide selection of cuisine including Mediterranean, Thai, Japanese, Latin American and of course German. The city's most famous speciality is Frankfurter Wurstchen, a long, thin, smoked pork sausage, together with Frankfurt Crown Cake with a delicious praline topping. The classic regional drink is 'ebbelwoi', an apple wine, often found in traditional taverns and served in decorative clay pitchers. Sold in varying strengths, some of them can be deceptively strong.

Frankfurt Tipping Advice

Although service charges are included in most bills, it is customary to tip porters about 2 DM per bag and hotel cleaning staff about 3 DM per night. Although a service charge is generally included in restaurant bills, it is usual to tip around five percent of the bill. Give the tip to the waiter or waitress as you pay the bill.
